As the Kansas City region prepares for an increase in refugees and immigrants arriving in the Kansas City metro, staff at Jewish Vocational Services (JVS) will address key components of culturally appropriate and effective use of translation services. Catherine Anderson, manager of Language and Cultural Services at JVS, will be featured presenter for a Thursday, Oct. 28, Zoom forum hosted by Communities Concerned for Immigrants and Refugees (CCIR), a regional learning and action network.
Discussion will focus on cultural competency and language access; how to set up a successful interpreter session; techniques for checking for comprehension; standards of interpretation, including confidentiality, boundaries, cultural competency and respect; national professional interpreting standards; and more.
The REACH Foundation supported the design and launch of CCIR in 2017. REACH has awarded $280,000 total to support education programs and forums for understanding barriers immigrants and refugees face in securing health and other critical resources.
