The REACH Foundation announced 29 core operating grants totaling $1.45 million to health care, advocacy and policy, and coordinating organizations for 2020. The core operating grant category was established early in REACH’s grantmaking history as an indication of the foundation’s commitment to increase the capacity and sustainability of the region’s health care safety net—the primary source of medical, behavioral and oral health care for the uninsured and underserved members of the foundation’s six-county service area.
The organizations selected for core partner grants include primary care, mental health and oral health care organizations, rural health networks, community health coalitions, and advocacy and policy organizations. To be considered for core support, organizations must be positioned to scale their efforts in ways that significantly impact targets outlined in the foundation’s Theory of Change as well as serve vulnerable populations as specified in the strategic plan, including homeless youth and adults, foster care youth, and immigrants and refugees.
Two organizations, United Community Services of Johnson County (UCS) and Grantmakers in Health (GIH), are new additions to the core partners list.
Senior Program Officer Dawn Downes expressed the foundation’s interest in extending core partnership funding to UCS due to its history as a trusted source of data analysis in the human services field.
“They are effective collaborators around important issues such as health equity, homelessness and supporting transition-age youth,” said Downes. “UCS is an important player in the safety net system and a valuable core partner to help advance REACH’s mission and vision.”
President and CEO Brenda Sharpe said REACH’s work with GIH, a national network of health funders, on programs and initiatives was invaluable in strengthening the foundation’s impact on the states of Kansas and Missouri and our six-county service area.
“Grantmakers in Health helps us leverage our work with that of other health funders across the country and top public health officials on issues including access to care, public policy, behavioral health and foundation governance,” said Sharpe.
