Views from the Field
In 2007, the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved brought forward an innovative concept that proposed to increase access to oral health care in Kansas by establishing a network of dental “hubs” at safety-net health care clinics with oral health outreach sites, or “spokes,” in underserved communities. Six foundations, including the REACH Foundation, signed on to support the project and contribute resources to a pool that included state funds. The public-private partnership that resulted substantially increased access to safety-net oral health services — from eight counties in 2007 to 78 counties in 2011. The number of dental visits in the grantee clinics increased from 42,306 in 2007 to 93,624 in 2011.
